Scriptural Explorations 2011

Scriptural Explorations are multi-faith meetings at which selected scripture texts from different faiths, relating to the chosen theme, are presented briefly and discussed. In a set of three meetings, texts from up to 9 faiths could be presented, ie Baha’i, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jain, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, and Zoroastrian texts.

The theme this time will be ‘Healthy Lifestyles’. The idea comes from a research project being run by Dr Haider Ali of the Open University, who hopes that the texts of different faiths could be used to encourage healthier lifestyles among faith community members. Dr Ali has kindly given his blessing to our borrowing of his theme.

The 4 meetings will take place on Wednesdays,  15th, 22nd, 29th June and 6th July, 2.30 – 4.30pm

Venue:  Streatham Friends Meeting House, Redlands Way, Roupell Park Estate, Brixton Hill, SW2 3LU

Notes:

  • Each presenter will select and present a short text from their scriptures or sacred writings related to the theme.
  • Each meeting is planned for 2 hours, with texts presented from 3 different faiths on each occasion.
  • A 10-minute period is available for each presenter. That will leave a further 20 minutes for questions and discussion on each presentation and a further 30 minutes for general discussion.
  • Copies of an English translation of the chosen texts will need to be available for all participants. A note of where each text comes from will be helpful for anyone who wants to follow up with further study.

If you would like to enrol for this set of meetings, or to present a text, please inform Alan Gadd, 24 Holmewood Gardens, London SW2 3RS, 020 8678 8977 alangadd@yahoo.co.uk
